Golden Tragedy A guest post by Jules Surface

What makes a film a good tragedy

Every now and then I am going to share another blogger with you. Here is the first of this series.

TOP 5 GOLDEN TRAGEDIES

by Jules Surface

When it comes to tragedies, my loyal reader, I want to clarify a few irritations; no, they are not tear-jerkers. Tears irritate me, and not because I am a testosterone-fueled, heartless, mangy monster (it’s my steroid addiction that makes me that). No, I dislike much of its use, with regards to film, because often it is used for the sake of reminding people of terrible times, rather than truly creating something tragic. I do not call on any watchers of film to stop crying (Please, bawl away), but I’d like to give credit to the ones that can touch that heart of even the most emotionally numb human being (I should mention the steroids, again).

Big Oil and New Math

you may need this

Big Oil is using a New Math to steal your money

I remember when thy rolled out New Math, Dear Readers, and in truth it seemed a lot like Old Math.

But my Maths Teacher, Mr. Pratt ( yes that was the poor old bugger’s name, I don’t remember a thing he taught us, but his name… that I remember ).

But it seems to me that there is a New New Math, that of Big Oil.

Can You beat Billy Mays

he is missed

Are you the next Billy Mays or just the next Michael Phillips

Perhaps, Dear Readers, it was staying up and watching the Royal Wedding ( I couldn’t sleep…shuddup!) but I got to thinking about invention.

I remember once sitting in a bus station cafeteria in Washington DC and being utterly amazed by the pop-up-plate-thingy … take a plate…Bam another one pops up. What mad genius came up with that?

So can you spot genius from mere whimsy?

The Republican Hatred of Homosexuality

One nation

America belongs to all sexualities

I do not, Dear Readers, often talk about my other writing in this blog. But every so often the two worlds collide.

I just finished writing a new piece, called Ramiro and Julio, loosely based upon Romeo and Juliet, with a love story at the core of both stories.

My choice was to write about a homosexual couple, and in the early stages when discussing that idea with a few people I was bemused by the response of some.

Good news Racism is alive and well

President Obama

I don't see black or white, I see competence and compassion

In a stunning example of how money does not equate to class Donald Trump has been appealing to the racist element in the Republican party.

And he is leading in the polls.

The Return of the American Dream

Have we lost the American dream?

I have been talking with a lot of people recently, and they almost all have the same tone when we talk about the country, about the future. Ennui, leaden words, fragile hope.

It doesn’t matter if the people were Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal…

What is wrong with us? Why are we feeling so defeated?

Sally sings to the Butterfly King

Her voice was velvet-lined,
soft and tender and full of
deceitful hope. And he,
the Butterfly King knew it.

He let Sally sing, for a
moment he let himself
forget the truths that he
knew, and always hated.
